Without warning or legal justification, the two largest employers in Mauritania's mining sector have embarked on a scheme to remove large groups of workers. These plans have been implemented in spite of condemnation from trades unions, and in the glare of silence from the government.
On Monday 23 December 2013, First Quantum Minerals Ltd subsidiary Mauritanian Copper Mines (MCM) which operates near Akjoujt, dismissed 170 workers in the first stage of a plan to further reduce the workforce in the coming days.
The previoous day, Kinross Tasiast Mauritanie SA Ltd, owner by Kinross Gold Corp had dismissed 293 workers.
Both of these acts were carried out in direct contravention of the law which prohibits collective redundancy, yet the authorities remain inactive.
We demand that these foreign interests which control the economically important mining sector in Mauritania reverse their decisions which have resulted in the unfair dismissal of hundreds of workers and undermined the security of entire communities, and seek recourse to work within the existing legal frameworks to which they are subject.
To add strength to our demands we invite you to add your voices to ours by signing and sharing this petition.
